Victor De Rossa was a sympathetic older Italian gentleman with Swiss ancestors. He lived in a village near Lake Maggiore in Italy. Victor tried to feed his family by working as a farmer in the fields. Besides, he repaired wrist and pocket watches for small pocket money to be able to gift his grandchildren small presents from time to time. We met him during our Europe-tour in Italy. He invited us to spend some time in his village. He shared inspiring stories about his life and dreams with us. Victor made us laugh a lot and gave us a good time with his positive, humorous and calm nature. In the evenings, however, he started to open up more serious topics. His eyes were filled with sadness while he talked about his dreams.
He told us about many regrets he had about not realizing his true dreams.
One of which, was to create something on his own. The hobby and side job he had, repairing watches, was something he wanted to make more of. Most watches in the village, however, looked worn down and unsightly. Which is no surprise since the people living there couldn’t afford anything new. Nevertheless, the watches fulfilled their functional purpose. In Victor’s mind, however, a watch mustn’t just serve a functional purpose. Victor was very aware of his appearance and was quite fashionable with what he had. In his opinion, since a watch is something one wears outside and openly, it should have an emphasis on design as well. In that regard, he wanted to create his own timepiece with his understanding of functionality and design. The purpose was to give something back to the world but first and foremost to his beloved village at Lake Maggiore.
Due to hardships and the lack of means, he couldn’t realize his dreams. Though, he admitted, that he never really committed to fulfilling that dream. That he didn’t give his all and let himself down due to all the hardships, which got to his head, was his biggest regret. It was quite an emotional moment.
Five years later, we returned to that tiny but picturesque village in order to pay Victor De Rossa a visit. Our anticipation quickly ebbed away, when the villagers informed us that Victor De Rossa has passed away. With that, we lost a friend that had become very dear to us. Therefore, we have decided to make his dream come true, which is why we dedicated the brand to him, to keep his name alive…Victor De Rossa.
